Around 500 million people play chess globally and take an active interest in world class chess events. FIDE (the World Chess Federation) unites 186 national chess federations throughout the world and is responsible for organizing all the World Championships in various age categories. FIDE has been established since 1924 and is recognized by the IOC as the world body responsible for chess and its Championships.
